Focus, Amsterdam

Focus (co-operation with Michiel Voet) is an artwork about ‘the mirror of the soul’; the eye.

The eye gazes, watches, investigates and stares in amazement at the transformation of the city, and of the NDSM terrain. As a human sense organ, the eye is vulnerable. In this it rhymes with our physical world, which is also extremely vulnerable.

Focus raises the question of how we deal with our environment and with our natural resources, how we act as humans, and how we relate as individuals in this context.

It is difficult for one to look in the mirror thus to look into one’s soul. Reflection and self-reflection are always difficult and sometimes painful processes. Processes where we might rather not submit to, but which are sometimes necessary.
